The Definition of Marriage Amendment Bill has passed into New Zealand law, 77-44, making same sex marriage and joint adoption by married same sex couples legal. After the bill was announced, the entire hall of parliament burst into song together, singing Pokarekare Ana, a maori love song about a couple separated by distance and culture. It was one of the most moving things I have ever experienced, and I am very proud to be a New Zealander tonight.
